This morning, Council member José Huizar, officials from the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT), the Bureau of Engineering, and the L.A. Unified School District (LAUSD), and parents, teachers, and students from Breed and Sheridan Street elementary schools all joined forces to break ground on streetscape improvements intended to make it safer for parents and kids to walk and bike to and from those schools.

Thank you Sheridan Family for coming and supporting our Mighty Owls in our annual International Dance Day. Our students performed dances from various parts of the world. It was a wonderful experience!

Parents who attended eight trainings or more this year celebrated today with their children by taking part in a school luncheon. Our Sheridan Family thanks you for being an important part of your child's academic success and setting a good example for them to follow.

Students rarely want to trade places with teachers, but teachers had all the fun this week coding robots while their young students snuck envious peeks at the door of the noontime teacher activity. The teachers stopped by to learn how easy it is to code a robot as part of the process of recruiting teachers to participate in the new program, Building Opportunities with Teachers in Schools (BOTS), created and managed by USC Viterbi Adopt-a-School, Adopt-a-Teacher (USC VAST).

UniverSOUL Hip Hop brings world-class, Hip Hop artists and educators into K-12 classrooms to educate, empower, and engage students through the arts. Their program energetically blends the creative and communal practices of Hip Hop culture with the rigor and depth of standards-based pedagogy.

Next school year, first- and second-grade teachers will participate in a robotics-based Community of Practice (COP) throughout the 2018-19 academic year. By boosting teacher ability and self-confidence to teach coding and introduce robots as authentic, real-world digital learning opportunities, Building Opportunities with Teachers in Schools (BOTS), will give students access to 21st century digital skills.

Thank you Sheridan Family for volunteering your time and making our event a great success. We had about 150 participants that helped beautify our school. Also, a big thank you to our Project Manager: Deborah Raasch and her amazing team.

Teaching Artists with the Los Angeles Master Chorale

During the performance of our 5th grade students and LA Master Chorale singers, they presented this video of the Voices Within Program and how it helps students appreciate the arts. Many of our students were featured. Do you recognize anyone?

Our Fourth and Fifth Grade Mighty Owls participated today in the USC Robotics Fair. This is a fun day with all the robotics research labs providing demonstrations every half hour for groups of 15 people, plus some hands-on fun and games. The labs are spread out in four buildings, so there is a lot to walk around and see.
