Promesa Boyle Heights
A core Promesa value is building Boyle Heights residents’ power, capacity, and confidence, born out of a social justice mindset and tied to the larger political landscape of Boyle Heights. There is a feeling of being supported, that community members matter. This collective power, capacity, and confidence helps foster the goal of community members articulating and advocating for their needs, and believing they have the support and expertise to do so in a unified way.
Araceli Martinez

Araceli Martinez was born and raised in the Central Valley as the daughter of immigrant Zapotec farm workers. As a child of a two-parent working household, Araceli benefited from government sponsored programs like Head Start and the Migrant Education Program from a very early age. Araceli still remembers the excitement she felt when workers from the Migrant Education Program would come to her home with a van full of school supplies and books for her and her siblings to read throughout the summer. She strongly believes that continuous access to resources like this is the reason why she has been successful throughout her educational career and it greatly influenced her desire to work within the world of education. As a result, Araceli is committed to supporting others to also gain access to safe and reliable resources that will help them thrive in our society. Her experience as an indigenous first-generation woman in the United States has largely impacted the work that she does today as she believes in the right to equitable opportunities for all marginalized communities.
After graduating from Madera High School in the Central Valley, Araceli relocated to Los Angeles where she obtained a B.A. in English and a minor in Chicana(o)/Latina(o) Studies at Cal State LA. Through her participation in student-led organizations, Araceli met Promesa Boyle Heights in 2019 when she served as a College and Career Ambassador supporting 1st year college students to integrate into the Cal State LA community. Over time, Araceli has held multiple positions within the Promesa Boyle Heights team and now serves as a Community School Coordinator at Sheridan Street Elementary where she supports the implementation of a Community School Model as a strategy in our schools. Araceli’s involvement in nonprofit work, advocacy, and organizing shifted her career goals and professional aspirations as they provided a different lens and pathway to continue to support families and students outside of a classroom setting.
Outside of work, Araceli enjoys spending time in the sun, reading fiction novels and memoirs, and finding new restaurants that serve delicious food from all corners of our world.

Araceli Martínez nació y creció en el Valle Central como hija de dos trabajadores agrícolas migrantes zapotecas. Como hija en un hogar con dos padres trabajadores, Araceli se benefició de programas patrocinados por el gobierno como Head Start y el Programa de Educación para Migrantes desde una edad muy temprana. Araceli todavía recuerda la emoción que sentía cuando trabajadores del Programa de Educación para Migrantes llegaban a su casa con una camioneta llena de útiles escolares y libros para que ella y sus hermanos leyeran durante el verano. Ella cree firmemente que el acceso continuo a recursos como este es la razón por la que ha tenido éxito a lo largo de su carrera educativa y que influyó en gran medida su deseo de trabajar en el mundo de la educación. Como resultado, Araceli se compromete a apoyar a otros para que también obtengan acceso a recursos seguros y confiables que los ayudarán a prosperar en nuestra sociedad. Su experiencia como mujer indígena de primera generación en los Estados Unidos ha impactado en gran medida el trabajo que realiza hoy, ya que cree en el derecho a oportunidades equitativas para todas las comunidades marginadas.

A través de su participación en organizaciones dirigidas por estudiantes, Araceli conoció a Promesa Boyle Heights en 2019 cuando se desempeñó como Embajadora de Colegios y Careras apoyando a los estudiantes universitarios de primer año para integrarse en la comunidad de Cal State LA. Con el tiempo, Araceli ha ocupado múltiples puestos dentro del equipo de Promesa Boyle Heights y ahora se desempeña como Coordinadora de Escuelas Comunitarias en la Escuela Primaria Sheridan Street, donde apoya la implementación de un Modelo de Escuela Comunitaria como una estrategia en nuestras escuelas. La participación de Araceli en el trabajo de organizar y abogar y su rol en las organizaciones sin fines de lucro cambió sus objetivos y aspiraciones profesionales, ya que proporcionaron una perspectiva y un camino diferente para continuar apoyando a las familias y los estudiantes fuera del aula.
Fuera de su trabajo, Araceli disfruta pasar tiempo bajo el sol, leer novelas de ficción y memorias y encontrar nuevos restaurantes que sirven comida deliciosa de todos los rincones de nuestro mundo.
